REGICO as a new tool to map and illustrate developments ….

I am told there are people who do not care for maps, and I find it hard to believe.
Robert Louis Stevenson

Maps are one of the ways to allow for quick overviews. Once you are used to it they are easy to understand and allow displaying quite complex matters crisply and concisely. ESPON has developed a new tool allowing for quick production of customised maps.

The ESPON REGICO tool offers multi-scalar territorial analysis (MTA) to analyse how the performance of regions varies in relation to a specific area. The mapping tool facilitates users, for example, to relate regions to the ESPON space, to their respective national borders or their closer vicinity (e.g. neighbouring regions, catchment areas of commuters). It is a tool for benchmarking or as a means to decide on the distribution of investments in regional development. Initially designed for regional planners as well as national planning institutions, we think it could be very useful for staff of managing authorities and joint secretariats and / or programme evaluators.

This event will provide knowledge and practical skills to conduct your own analysis and find facts and trends about your programme area using the ESPON REGICO tool.

In a nutshell: ESPON REGICO allows to analyse regions regarding various (relative) indicators in different spatial contexts and relations. The tool is available as web application via: https://regico.espon.eu/

For more info please see:

We encourage you to test it ….

Mapping trends might come in handy for various purposes. Maps help to illustrate facts and trends and to analyse your programme area. A first tentative list of ideas where REGICO could support illustration:

  • Showing development trends in the programme area e.g. to inform your MC about trends in fields related to project clusters
  • Illustrating the analysis of trends in many areas relevant for the programme context as part of the evaluation
  • Discuss and justify a specific regional focus in larger programme area

Objectives

We will

  • Present the tool
  • Start testing it a bit
  • Discuss and explore options for using it
